Pyotr Nikolaev of Kaliningrad, Russia was among the children born of October 31st who can claim to be the world's 7-billionth inhabitant. Joining the likes of Danica May Camacho of Manila and Nargis Yadav of Uttar Pradesh, young Mr. Nikolaev became a symbol of the modern world even as he was born into a city historically associated with the Soviet era.

According to The Voice of Russia, the choice to honor a baby born in Kaliningrad was symbolic: The city is reportedly the location from which the UN will unveil its plan to deal with the global population boom.

In fact, this mid-sized Russian town has become a travel hotspot as of late. A Baltic port situated between Poland and Lithuania, Kaliningrad is one of 13 proposed host cities for the FIFA World Cup, which will be held for the first time in Russia in 2018. Local authorities are also hoping to welcome a Disneyland or similar theme park in the near future.

Before the new mobs of tourists arrive, here's a peek at Kaliningrad:
