9/11 Charities Making The Biggest Difference

In the 12 years since the tragic World Trade Center attacks, a number of organizations have committed their missions to meaningfully remembering the thousands of victims murdered, supporting survivors and finding inspirational ways to channel grief into an opportunity to bring comfort, hope and peace to the world.

Originally established to provide support for the more than 3,000 children affected by September 11, Tuesday's Children has now evolved into helping anyone impacted by any disaster around the world.

michael lynch firefighter

To honor the memory of Michael Lynch, a New York City firefighter who sacrificed his life along with 342 others on Sept. 11, 2001, the eponymous foundation provides educational opportunities to children of 9/11 victims and firefighters –- both fallen and active.

By providing information, support services and annual events for 9/11 families, rescue workers and survivors, VOICES of September 11 continues to commemorate the essence of that tragic day and is helping to prevent –- and improve responses to –- terrorist acts by promoting public policy reform.

To thank those who stepped in when New York needed them most, the New York Says Thank You Foundation galvanizes hundreds of volunteers who have been affected by disasters. The organization is currently working on rebuilding 200 homes that were devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

911 memorial and museum new york

The September 11 Memorial & Museum exists to remember and honor the thousands of victims murdered in the horrific attacks of Feb. 26, 1993 and Sept. 11, 2001 through its expansive exhibits and gives visitors a chance to reflect at the memorial pool where the names of the victims are inscribed.

Every year on the anniversary of September 11, millions of volunteers pour their energy into service projects along with 9/11 Day to pay tribute to victims, survivors and first responders in a way that helps channel grief into an opportunity to give back.

While working at the Ground Zero, 8,000 pounds of steel crushed John Feal's foot, a defining moment that made him realize that he needed to help other responders who suffered catastrophic injuries and illnesses. Established in 2005, the FealGood Foundation helps ease the financial burden of medical care and educates the public about the ailments these responders face.
