I-96 Shootings: Michigan Police Believe Latest Incident Not Related

Police Investigate Latest Freeway Incident

A string of 24 shootings along a Michigan interstate have left motorists on edge, but police believe a Monday morning incident feared to be connected to the mysterious shooting spree was actually a projectile hitting a car, according to AnnArbor.com.

A motorist called 911 after noticing a hole in her window while driving on U.S. 23. Police believe the incident is unrelated to the past shootings and that a bullet did not make the hole, but are not yet able to confirm that theory.

A part of the interstate was briefly closed and Brighton schools were also temporarily put on lockdown. The roadway reopened and the lockdown was lifted later in the morning, Patch reports.

In the last two weeks, 24 random shootings have been reported along the stretch of interstate, including 10 in Wixom, a city northwest of Detroit. After a nine-day break in shootings, two car shootings occurred Saturday in Fowlerville. One of the cars was shot at with no injuries. In the other incident, a motorist sustained the first injury in the string of shootings while driving to Detroit to see Game 3 of the World Series.

According to Patch and the Free Press, at least two Chevy Cavalier drivers were pulled over Monday as police hunted for the perpetrator.

Earlier, police said the gunman, described by witnesses as a white male in his 30s, was using a vehicle dark in color and similar in appearance to a Cavalier.
