A Patient's Gratitude: A Video I Hope Every Healthcare Provider Will See

As a healthcare advocate and former ICU patient who has been transferred throughout the many divisions of the healthcare system, I would like to say "Thank you" to healthcare providers and all hospital personnel for choosing this path in life and for all that you do each day for your patients and their families.

My story begins one month after graduating from high school in 2004. I was on my way home from swim practice and was involved in a near fatal car accident. I lost 60% of my blood, my heart moved across my chest, lungs collapsed, and my major organs and pelvis were pulverized. I had to be brought back to life eight times on the operating table.

While in a 2 month coma, I was unable to move or talk, yet I was aware and could often hear and see. Then, with a lot of support from my family and medical team, I clawed my way back to the living. First blinking my eyelids, then squeezing a hand, I gradually emerged from my locked-in state and went on to make a full recovery three years later, which involved swimming on my college team and crossing the finish line in the 2007 Hawaii Ironman.

As a healthcare advocate and former ICU patient who has been transferred throughout the many divisions of the healthcare system, I would like to say "Thank you" to healthcare providers and all hospital personnel for choosing this path in life and for all that you do each day for your patients and their families.

This is a short video that I created that I hope all healthcare providers and professionals get to watch in order to see the impact of their work.
