Learning to Give, Early

I often look for charitable outlets in Los Angeles where young people can contribute in the act of giving, and through the years I have found and participated in many fun activities that involved the spirit if charity.

Ever since I founded Womenfound, right here in Brentwood, mothers and daughters in my community have been asking me how they can get involved in charity and instill in their children from a young age the concept of doing good and giving back.

I often look for charitable outlets in Los Angeles where young people can contribute in the act of giving, and through the years I have found and participated in many fun activities that involved the spirit if charity.

But what impresses me today is the young daughter of an acquaintance who has taken on a project on her own pre-teen shoulders, and decided to make a difference. Together with Access Books, Gabby M. has taken to the streets of Brentwood and Santa Monica for a book drive to benefit an inner-city school with a bare library.

Gabby, indeed most of the children in this area, attend schools with well-stocked libraries. In fact, if there's ever a shortage, the families come together and either provide the books or manage to fund their purchase. Gabby has recognized this lack in other, less advantaged schools, and has taken it upon herself to change these facts for at least one of them.

Together with Access Books, Gabby will be dropping off collected books at the Mariposa Nabi Primary Center, at 987 S. Mariposa Ave, L.A. CA 90006, on Monday the 12th. The community has come together to help, and designated drop-off points are now at Menchies in Santa Monica (Montana Ave), Starbucks at San Vicente and 26th Street, Starbucks at San Vicente and Barrington as well as Yogurt Land on San Vicente.

If you have any Elementary School-appropriate books you'd like to give-away for a good cause, please bring them by and drop them off this weekend. Collection is on Monday, and inspiration is only one book away.
