There was no clear frontrunner going into the Yellowhammer State contest. The latest poll from Public Policy Polling showed three candidates -- Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts; former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.); and Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House -- nearly neck-and-neck. Romney led with 31 percent of the vote going into Tuesday, while Gingrich and Santorum followed closely, with 30 percent and 29 percent of the vote, respectively. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) trailed with 8 percent.

Romney finished third in the contest in 2008, with 17.8 percent of the vote, according to The New York Times. Paul placed fourth, garnering just 2.7 percent.

Alabama has 50 delegates, but only 47 are up for grabs on primary day. The three remaining delegates are party leaders who are not pledged to any candidate at the national level.
