Alaska Caucus 2012 Outlook: Mitt Romney Looks For Super Tuesday Win

Candidates Battle For The Last Frontier

The 2012 Alaska Caucus, or Presidential Preference Poll, is one of ten contests taking place on Super Tuesday.

The last frontier has 27 delegates, 24 of which will be awarded proportionally based on the results of the presidential contest. The remaining three delegates will be allocated by Republican National Committee members, who are free to vote for any candidate at the RNC convention later this year in August.

According to the Alaska GOP, 14,000 Republicans cast votes in the state's Presidential Preference Poll in 2008. That year, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney placed first in the contest with 43.7 percent of the vote. U.S. Rep. Ron Paul finished in third place behind former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Virtually no polling has been conducted on the Republican race in Alaska going into the contest on Super Tuesday.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has not formally endorsed a candidate competing for the GOP presidential nomination. She has, however, voiced support for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in recent months.

The following states are also holding primary or caucus contests on Tuesday: Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia.
