A bystander wounded by NYPD gunfire during Friday's shooting outside the Empire State Building is defending police conduct despite nearly being shot in the head.
Alberto Ramos told NBC, "I have law enforcement in my family. I don't blame the cops, not one bit."
Ramos described his panicked feelings when he saw the gunman. "I remember the guy in the suit turning around, and next thing I know, he raised his hand, and there was a handgun in his hand," he said. "And as soon as I saw that handgun -- you kind of freeze, and you kind of know what's coming next, and it's nothing good, when someone raises his gun to an officer."
Construction worker Brian Dillon had seen Jeffrey Johnson kill former co-worker Steve Ercolino outside Hazan Imports near the Empire State Building, and alerted cops. Cops pursued Johnson near Fifth Avenue when he raised his gun and aimed it at police officers.
The officers fired a total of 16 rounds, killing Johnson and accidentally hitting nine bystanders with NYPD bullets.
Ramos was shot in his left foot, and a bullet barely missed his head.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has since defended officers' use of force:
When you're told that someone just killed someone around the corner, and five seconds later that person identified as the shooter points the gun at you ... it was the appropriate action to take.
Johnson's mother has also spoken out and said although she believes her son was a caring individual, the NYPD was justified in killing him.
