'American Idol' Contestant Rickey Smith Dies In Car Crash At 36

"American Idol" contestant Rickey Smith was killed in a multi-car accident in Oklahoma on Friday morning, Amy Elliott of the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, confirmed to The Huffington Post. Smith was 36.

Elliott cited the cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries and the manner of death as an accident.

Fox 25 reports that Smith was killed by a driver going the wrong way on Interstate 240. The driver, identified as 27-year-old Gerardo Cerda, Jr., was hospitalized and allegedly booked for a DUI.

Smith appeared on Season 2 of "American Idol" alongside Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard, who later went on to win in 2003. Aiken tweeted that he was heartbroken after hearing the news about Smith's death:
