An Eye-Opening Look At How The Wage Gap Impacts Latinas

Can we live?! Nope, not on these wages.

It’s no secret that, on average, an American woman makes approximately 79 cents for every dollar paid to a white man. However, the wage gap is even larger for Latinas.

According to the American Association of University Women, Latinas in the U.S. are paid, on average, 54 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Latino men.

This disparity ― and the impact it has on Latinas and their families ― is the subject of a new video from mitú.

Titled “How Equal Is Her Pay?” the video offers a eye-opening side-by-side look at how the average Latina’s wages, annual salary and socioeconomic status compares to that of her white, male counterpart’s.

The Latina pay gap is not simply a “Latina issue”― it’s a national issue.

As noted by the National Partnership For Women And Families in 2015, nearly 3 million family households in the U.S. are headed by Latinas and 40 percent of all Latina-headed family households live below the poverty line. Due to the Latina wage gap, these families have less money to spend on goods and services that help drive economic growth. And that’s a problem for everyone.
