Why This Mom Really Wanted Her Daughter To Share Her First Name

It's not unusual for a son to inherit his father's name. Think Martin Luther King Jr., Sammy Davis Jr., and Robert Downey Jr. The same isn't true for women, but one mom decided to break the mold.

Sheila Grady Sr. told HuffPost Live's Nancy Redd that the name she originally chose for her daughter, Christine, just wasn't fitting right. Ignoring societal norms, Grady Sr. nixed Christine and instead chose Sheila for her daughter just 24 hours after giving birth.

"I said to my husband 'You know, I want her to be Sheila. I just love that name," Grady Sr. said. "I really didn’t see it so much as naming her after me."

For Grady Jr., no harm done there, except for some logistical stuff.

"The only time this really became an issue was when we got mail or when the doctor called to let us know that Sheila had an appointment and we would both show up even though it was only for one of us," Grady Jr. said.
