Congressional Democrats universally condemned the Republican Obamacare repeal bill that the House passed on Thursday.
But Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, speaking with characteristic bluntness, may have summed it up best with a single tweet.
Donald Trump and Republicans just celebrated voting to let thousands of Americans die so that billionaires get tax breaks. Think about that. pic.twitter.com/hbOp7k2TQe
— Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) May 4, 2017
Here were some of the sharpest responses from Sanders’ Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate:
Trumpcare isn’t a health care bill. A bill that destroys health care for millions to shovel cash to the rich isn’t a health care bill. #AHCA
— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) May 4, 2017
This bill is heartless, it is bad for Ohio, and it will leave real Ohioans struggling to afford care. -SB
— Sherrod Brown (@SenSherrodBrown) May 4, 2017
Never have I seen legislative action that reveals such clear disdain for the human dignity of the most vulnerable among us.
— John Lewis (@repjohnlewis) May 4, 2017
Remember whose corner @HouseGOP was in when they voted to kick 24 million people off their healthcare -- it wasn't yours. https://t.co/3GVbJc8ef2
— Tim Ryan (@TimRyan) May 4, 2017
The Affordable Care Act saves lives. The GOP health care plan? This plan will destroy lives.
— Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris) May 4, 2017
What just happened - the deliberate decision to hurt millions to fund a millionaire tax cut - isn't America. We will prove it next November.
— Chris Murphy (@ChrisMurphyCT) May 4, 2017
Several Democrats mocked President Donald Trump’s January 2014 tweet in which he asked, “It’s Thursday. How many people have lost their healthcare today?”
It’s Thursday. And if @realDonaldTrump gets his way, 24 million will lose their health coverage because of #Trumpcare. https://t.co/t2BV8QOar2
— Nancy Pelosi (@NancyPelosi) May 4, 2017
— Al Franken (@alfranken) May 4, 2017
No matter what happens in the House, I will fight this craven health care bill in the Senate. #VoteNoAHCA https://t.co/ILJanbsvJx
