America's Best Regional Sandwich: A HuffPost Deathmatch

We can't resist a little friendly competition around here.

Since the day humans first put fillings between slices of bread, we've been racing toward the title of "Best Sandwich Ever." We hope we never quite get there, because the experimentation along the way is definitely the best part. However, we can't resist a little friendly competition around here, so we devised a Deathmatch to see what you guys think is America's Best Regional Sandwich.

Now, obviously there are too many sandwiches in this category to be totally comprehensive. In particular, we owe an apology to the pulled pork sandwich, the Hoosier Tenderloin, the pimento cheese sandwich, the pastrami on rye and upstate New York's spiedies. These sandwiches were either too ubiquitous or too obscure, and we think the sandwiches in the bracket below fall somewhere in between. And yes, you'll notice that there are two sandwiches on this list that were invented in Louisiana -- we did this on purpose because they happen to be two of the best sandwiches on earth. You mad?

Here's how the Best Regional Sandwiches voting will go down:

  • Round One voting opens July 30 -- vote right now!
  • Wednesday, July 31 at 12:00am Eastern, Round Two begins.
  • Thursday, August 1 at 12:00am Eastern, you'll be able to vote in Round Three.
  • Friday morning, August 2, we'll announce which American regional sandwich wins the battle.

*As usual, we wished we could have more than eight bracket spots. If we missed your favorite hometown specialty, don't forget to let us (and everyone else) know in the comments!
