Bill Clinton: Birther Issue 'Ludicrous' (VIDEO)

WATCH: Clinton Calls Birther Issue 'Ludicrous'

Former president Bill Clinton weighed in on the debunked conspiracy theory that President Barack Obama is not a citizen of the United States and thus ineligible to serve during an appearance on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday.

"If I were them, I'd be really careful riding that birther horse too much," he said. "Everyone knows it's ludicrous."

In recent weeks, potential presidential candidate Donald Trump has added fuel to the fire in the so-called "birther" debate. He released his own birth certificate last week and urged Obama to do the same. His calls came despite the fact that the president's birth records have been accessible online for more than three years.

Karl Rove seemed less than pleased with the manner in which Trump sounded off on the issue during an appearance on "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox News last week.

"The right wing base of the Republican party, I'm part of that right wing base, is not in love with the issue of birthers," he said, according to Business Insider. "I mean, there is an element inside the Republican party, and outside the Republican party, that's fallen in love with this but the majority of Republicans and the vast majority of Americans accept is he a U.S. citizen capable of being president."
