WASHINGTON -- BONMi, a new Vietnamese-inspired banh mi sandwich shop, is set to open Monday at 900 19th St. NW.
The Huffington Post took a look around inside earlier this week. The small space, with indoor seating for 34, is modestly decorated. It's aiming for lunchtime traffic, and accordingly, it'll only be open on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. An outdoor patio during spring and summer will accommodate another 20 people.
Representatives won't reveal the identities of the venture's financial backers, but it was revealed that several are former military personnel who developed a liking for banh mi during their travels. Although the 19th Street location has yet to open, a second location is already being scouted. It will likely be in a more residential neighborhood and open weekends.
As HuffPost reported earlier In September, the menu will feature several renditions of the traditional Vietnamese sandwich. Fillings include three types of spiced chicken, pork meatballs, garlic black pepper pork, brisket, garlic tofu or butternut squash, plus toppings house-pickled carrots and daikon radish, cucumber, cilantro and chili-lime mayonnaise. Salads and summer rolls will also be offered.
