Police said a man found dead under the boardwalk Thursday morning in Far Rockaway did not die as a result of superstorm Sandy, but was killed by two gunshots to the head.

An NYPD spokeswoman said Thursday that the body was discovered by a New York City Parks Department employee who was cleaning debris from under the boardwalk near Beach 13th Street.

Police said the discovery was made at about 9:30 a.m.

Police said Friday that the investigation into the death is ongoing.

The boardwalk area where the body was found is south of Seagirt Boulevard -- almost directly across from Silver Point County Park and Atlantic Beach and just west of the Atlantic Beach Bridge. ___
