Brookfield Zoo Welcomes Baby Giraffe: Watch Male Calf Take His First Steps (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

WATCH: Brookfield Zoo's New Baby Giraffe Takes First Steps

The Brookfield Zoo's latest baby — a male giraffe — took his first steps soon after his June 21 birth and on Tuesday, the 173-pound calf made his debut before the public at the Chicago-area zoo.

The 7½-year-old giraffe and first-time mom, Jasiri, gave birth to the new calf, according to a statement from Brookfield Zoo. The newborn was sired by four-year-old Hasani, a visitor from Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, Kansas.

With a much longer gestation period than humans, giraffes carry their babies for a full 14½-months before giving birth while standing. Jasiri's new baby stands at five-feet nine-inches and according to the zoo, could grow to be 18 feet tall.
