Snow Storm Traps Drivers Upstate (LIVE BLOG)

A heavy snow storm hit Buffalo this morning, with as much as 24 inches pounding Western New York on Thursday. Hundreds of motorists are stranded on Interstate 90 near Buffalo, and conditions are worsening.

Motorists were stranded after an accident caused a backup and the idling trucks and cars got stuck overnight when a storm dumped up to 2 feet of snow on the area.

Police said buses were being used Thursday to transport stranded motorists to a shelter set up at a senior center.

State troopers said an intersecting 3-mile stretch of Interstate 190 has reopened.

CNN is reporting that the weather conditions will continue to worsen:

Forecasters said an additional 10 to 14 inches of snow is likely from "the most persistent bands" over the city of Buffalo through 11 p.m., adding up to a total accumulation of around 3 feet at the deepest.

Another band is expected to drop 10 to 14 inches of snow south of the city through 6 a.m. Friday, with a total accumulation of up to 2 feet in those areas, the National Weather Service said.
