This year’s solar eclipse put Casper, Wyoming, in the national spotlight, as the city’s clear skies and elevation are great for galaxy-gazing. But this place has eclipsed other outdoor destinations for a long time: What began as a classic Western town with cowboys, gamblers, bootleggers and the like is now a go-to spot for travelers who love wild adventures in mountains, rivers and fields.

Of course, all this scenery provides some stunning photo opps. We took a virtual trek through Casper and the surrounding area on Instagram to find the spots most worthy of a ’gram.

Platte River Trails

Nearly 10 miles of trail follow the North Platte River river through Casper and past campgrounds, public art installations and plenty of scenery. Stop to fish, paddle, float or take photos as you trek.

Muddy Mountain
You can camp, hunt, fish and bike in this 1,260-acre wildlife wonderland about an hour's drive from Casper. Hiking toward scenic overlooks makes for a great group shot.

Hogadon Basin
This charming ski resort on Casper Mountain features 19 runs of varying difficulty. You'll get a photo-worthy view of downtown Casper from the top and equally stunning shots from the lift.

Tate Geological Museum

These exhibits at Casper College boast more than 3,000 fossils, including dinosaurs and the oldest mounted mammoth in North America. The faux T. rex out front is especially photogenic at sunrise.

National Historic Trails Interpretive Center

Through a series of interactive exhibits, this museum details how travelers used the Oregon, California, Mormon and Pony Express Trails to cross Wyoming in the 1800s. Replicas of tipis and covered wagons will make your followers think you've traveled back in time.

The Nicolaysen Art Museum
Explore 25,000 square feet of contemporary art exhibits in this renovated power building, which hosts regular art workshops for kids and adults. Larger-than-life pieces are the perfect photo opps.

Urban Bottle Wine & Spirits
A pair of local couples opened this boutique liquor store last year as a place to savor beer, wine and spirits with friends. Some of the tastings and events feature live music in a historic space that's worth capturing on film.

Head about 40 miles west of Casper to see this ravine full of otherworldly rock formations. Your Insta followers may recognize it as a setting from the 1997 movie "Starship Troopers."

This spot is just a short hike from the Bridle Trail trailhead in Rotary Park, near the base of Casper Mountain. Snap a photo of the falls as a souvenir, then continue on for spectacular views of Casper from above.
