San Rafael police cited 254 drivers for illegal cell phone use during the first 16 days of April, also known as Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Eighty-eight of the tickets, which are for texting while driving or talking on hand-held cell phones, were issued Tuesday. April 3 and 16 were designated for heavy enforcement statewide.

San Rafael police more than tripled their output of tickets over the same period last year, when 75 drivers were cited, said spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher. ___
