An accused carjacker thought he was getting away with an SUV, but found something he didn't expect in the backseat: the driver's 91-year-old husband.
Chateen Latfolla, 35, is facing kidnapping and aggravated assault charges after allegedly carjacking an elderly couple in Phoenix on Saturday, according to ABC15.com.
The incident began when officers pulled over the suspect, who was in a pickup truck, for numerous traffic violations.
When an officer approached the truck, Latfolla sped away, but eventually his truck became immobilized when it struck a large rock, KPHO-TV reported.
At that point, police say the suspect exited the vehicle and ran to an SUV being driven by an elderly couple. Then he allegedly strong-armed his way into the SUV by pulling the 85-year-old woman behind the wheel from the driver's seat.
He then drove off, not realizing that her husband was in the back seat.
Latfolla must have figured out what happened, because officers eventually found the stolen vehicle at the Wild Horse Pass Casino and the carjacked man was safe with security, ABC15.com reported.
Police found Latfolla there as well. He was booked two counts of robbery, one count of aggravated assault, kidnapping, vehicle theft, and drug possession. He was also booked on outstanding warrants, AZFamily.com reported.
Although the victim and the car are okay, the woman who Latfolla allegedly pulled out of the SUV treated at an area hospital for a head injury.
