Last summer, Cesar Rosales and his coworkers became increasingly frustrated by a customer who refused to tip them for washing and drying his vehicle at a Humboldt Park car wash, prosecutors allege. When they decided to let the customer know how they felt, he allegedly murdered Rosales.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that 40-year-old Marcus Gordon was ordered held without bail Sunday in the August 2010 murder of Rosales. Gordon and his passenger allegedly got into a physical altercation with employees of the Citgo car wash in the 1300 block of North Pulaski Road after they refused to dry his vehicle by hand since he never tipped them. Gordon reportedly left the scene, then returned 30 minutes later and shot Rosales in the chest.
Cook County assistant state's attorney Morgan Creppel told a judge Sunday that Rosales "stumbled into the store and made a dying declaration that the guy they had fought with earlier came back for him, came back to kill him," the Chicago Tribune reports.
Several people allegedly witnessed the murder, but it took authorities months to find Gordon, who was on parole for a 2005 drug-dealing conviction, according to the Tribune. His criminal history includes multiple drug convictions and aggravated battery.
Rosales' girlfriend told the Sun-Times the victim worked for tips only, and would send money to his eight children in Guatemala.
