Chicago Police Launch Text Message Tipline For Students

Chicago Public Schools and Chicago police officials Monday unveiled a series of new and beefed-up measures designed to help cut the numbers of students being injured or killed.

Chicago Public Schools Chief Arne Duncan was joined by Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis at Dyett High School, 555 E. 51st St., where both men said the initiatives are needed to help tamp down violence that has left 12 CPS students killed from gun violence during the summer. This weekend, two 17-year-old students were the first two CPS students killed since school started Sept. 2. During the 2007-08 school year 26 CPS students were killed, 23 by guns.

"In recent weeks unspeakable tragedies that have claimed the lives of innocent victims have outraged all of us as educators and law enforcement, we must do what we can to prevent violence against our children," Weis said.
