Police have plenty of questions for the mother of a small boy found wandering the streets of Englewood on Chicago's South Side during a bitterly cold Monday night.
A neighbor called police after spotting the child, believed to be 3 or 4 years old, running on the sidewalk in the 7200 block of South Hermitage around 11:23 p.m. Monday, reports the Sun-Times.
According to Police News Affairs, detectives are talking with the boy's mother to determine how the child wound up alone and outside so late at night amid freezing temperatures. According to NBC Chicago, detectives said the mother called police after friends of hers saw news coverage of her son.
Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines told the Tribune the boy couldn't tell police his or his parents' name when they found him in the 19 degree weather. Despite the cold, the boy checked out as healthy at a local hospital and was released into custody of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
When authorities found the child, said to be roughly three feet tall and about 35 pounds, he was at least dressed for winter; a police alert said the boy was wearing a down coat, winter hat, sweatshirt, pants and shoes.
