Chicago Weather: Freezing Rain, Sleet, Snow In Thursday's Forecast

It was expected to be a cold day filled with a swath of precipitation in Chicago on Thursday.

And the storm system has delivered. Freezing rain fell during the morning and early afternoon in the Chicago area, making for a slower than usual morning commute, ABC Chicago reports.

That precipitation turned into heavy snow in the north suburbs of Lake and McHenry County and was expected to bring between one and three inches in Chicago Thursday, Fox Chicago reports.

As of late Thursday afternoon, more than 200 flights at O'Hare International Airport were cancelled due to the snowfall. The storm was expected to slam the evening commute in the Chicago area with continued heavy snowfall.

The city's fleet of trucks was ready for the storm system and 199 of them have been out salting major roadways since 4 a.m. amid the varying forms of falling precipitation. Want to watch them in action? Visit the city's Plow Tracker.

Lake-effect snowfall will likely continue along the lake through early Friday, according to NBC Chicago. The next chance for precipitation -- in the form of rain -- in the area is Sunday.
