Independent Voter: 'Good people can be deceived, and even the elect of God can be deceived. (The 'elect' are those chosen by God for salvation.) Jesus plainly predicted that the Christian elect were susceptible to deception (Matthew 24:24), and Jesus was never more right in any of his predictions than this.'

Trump Christian Voter:
'Oh, really? Come on. Is there any actual historical instance of the Christian elect being deceived? I can't think of one.'

Independent Voter:
'I suppose I could cite the fifteen-hundred-year-long treatment of Jews. The Christian elect were deceived in preventing Jews from holding public office in Christian Europe, and not allowing Jews to marry Christians, and making Jews wear distinctive clothing 700 years ago, and accusing Jews of killing Christian babies to use baby blood to make bread, and accusing Jews of urinating and defecating upon Christian holy objects like crosses and communion bread, and accusing Jews of poisoning Christians in the bubonic plague, and calling Jews Christ Killers and God Killers and Satan's Spawn, and not allowing Jews to live among Christians but ghettoizing them and locking them behind walls and gates at night, and having the Talmud publicly burned in Paris and Rome, and depicting Jews as devils and pigs in art and plays and sermons, and expelling Jews from every country in Europe, and killing Jews in Crusades and pogroms and riots, and voting for the Nazi Party.'

Trump Christian Voter:
'OK, fine. If you want to press the whole anti-Semitism thing, there was some general deception among the Christian elect. But besides this, surely there are no other historical instances of the Christian elect being deceived.'

Independent Voter:
'I could mention the ages-long persecution of heretics and apostates who were made to ache upon strappado and wheel and wrack and all the other invented Inquisitorial instruments of torture. I would suppose the elect were deceived in killing these people.'

Trump Christian Voter:
'OK, the elect were deceived about killing religious dissidents. OK. Fine. But besides this, surely there are no other historical instances of the Christian elect being deceived.'

Independent Voter:
'I might add the three-hundred-year European witchcraze where the entire spectrum of Christian intellect--from illiterate peasants to judges and university professors--suffered a mass delusion in thinking witches were afoot and riding brooms. A hundred thousand fake witches were burned to cinders before Europe's Christian elect became undeceived about that.'

Trump Christian Voter:
Really? I thought the witch thing was just a brief episode in New England. I didn't know it went on for three hundred years in Europe! OK. OK. But besides this, surely there are no other historical instances of the Christian elect being deceived.'

Independent Voter:
'The Wars of Religion just popped into my head. Wars of religious intolerance from 1528 to 1648 covered Europe in corpses and inundated it in blood. Catholics killed Protestants, Protestants killed Catholics, Protestants killed Protestants. Some, like Protestant Quaker Mary Dyer, fled to America for religious freedom but were hanged by fellow Protestants. The Christian elect were much deceived in those killing fields.'

Trump Christian Voter:
'You know, I remember something about this in a history class I took once. OK, fine. But besides this, surely there are no other historical instances of the Christian elect being deceived.'

Independent Voter:
'Well, I could hurry this up and pick any decade in any recent century in any Western country and I'm sure I'd find the Christian elect deceived about one thing or another.'

Trump Christian Voter:
Yeah, I bet you could. But surely there's no VERY RECENT instance of the Christian elect being deceived.'

Independent Voter:
'Well, not to put too fine a point on this mechanical pencil, but how about electing an ill-bred, sub-ethical self-publicist as President of the USA, a man without any conspicuous virtue, a man morally outpaced by every kindergardener in the land, a man who would have been fired from a job on the lube rack for saying the things he said, a man who would not have lasted a day running a fire works stand for saying the things he said? Would there be any deception of the Christian elect in electing a man like that?'

Trump Christian Voter:
'No! No! Not at all! There's zero precedent for that kind of deception!

Independent Voter: 'But good people CAN be deceived!'
