Clint Dempsey Sees Red, Gets Red For Ripping Ref's Notebook To Pieces

Clint Dempsey Sees Red, Rips Ref's Notebook To Pieces

Hey, ref, you're making Clint Dempsey mad. You won't like him when he's mad.

DEMPSEY SMASH!

The Seattle Sounders forward got a little frustrated near the end of Tuesday night's U.S. Open Cup match against the Portland Timbers. So the Major League Soccer player relieved his feelings by knocking the referee's notebook to the turf, then picking it up and ripping it into pieces.

The angry move came after referee Daniel Radford issued a red card to Dempsey's teammate Michael Azira for throwing an elbow. Unsurprisingly, Dempsey's antics earned him a red card as well and, according to New York Times sports reporter Sam Borden, might even result in a longer suspension:

Per Sports Illustrated, thanks to those two red cards, plus defender Brad Evans' two yellow cards and an injury earlier in the game, Seattle ended up with just seven men on the field, while Portland finished with a full squad of 11 players.

Seattle lost 3-1. Afterward, police escorted the referees off the field:
