During the wintery holiday season of giving, it's impossible to ignore what responsibility we have in helping the less fortunate. That is, unless you are Bill O'Reilly. As Stephen Colbert pointed out on Monday's "Colbert Report," O'Reilly's position on charity is not quite as generous as one might expect from such an outspoken Catholic.
In a recent episode of his Fox News show, O'Reilly responded to Congressman Jim McDermott (D-Wash.), who said that Jesus did not feed the hungry with food stamps. "The problem I have," O'Reilly said, "You're helping one group but hurting another group, a bigger group. I don't know if Jesus would be down with that."
Cue Colbert's feigned agreement with his "Papa Bear."
"He didn't take the loaves and fishes from the rich," he jokingly agreed. "He conjured them out of thin air! He was like Christ Angel Mindfreak!"
"What's a Christian like me supposed to do? Forgive them? No!" he continued.
He then highlighted another Fox News host with a distinct lack of empathy for the poor. John Stossel recently donned a fake beard and went undercover as a panhandler, earning a whole $11 from passersby.
"That day, John Stossel learned what we already knew," Colbert said. "When people look at him, they're full of pity."
