76 Colleges Are Now Under Investigation For How They Handled Sex Assault Cases

The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights is now reviewing 76 colleges and universities for how they handle sexual assault cases, federal officials confirmed Wednesday.

The Education Department began investigating Kansas State University on Aug. 4, and Johns Hopkins University and UCLA on Aug. 8. Stony Brook University in New York came under investigation on July 23.

Each school is being reviewed for whether it violated the gender equity law Title IX in its handling of sexual violence cases. Investigations can take from one to several years, and typically result in resolution agreements forcing policy and staffing changes on the university's part.

UCLA had not yet been contacted by the Education Department, a school official told The Huffington Post.

In a statement, university spokesman Tod Tamberg said, "UCLA is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for our entire campus community."

A California state auditor review declared in June that UCLA has an "adequate overall process" for dealing with sexual violence on campus, but identified areas where it needed to improve, such as training for university employees.

No information was available on whether UCLA's investigation was a proactive review or the result of a complaint.

Kansas State University said its investigation was due to a complaint, and that for privacy reasons, it wouldn't comment directly on the details. Stony Brook University did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Binghamton University in New York was recently removed from the list. Binghamton's review was closed administratively by the office because the office "found that the issues had been addressed in an earlier OCR compliance review of the SUNY system," an Education Department official said.

Stony Brook was unaware of the pending investigation. University spokeswoman Lauren Sheprow told HuffPost, "We are aware that an individual filed a complaint with the Office for Civil Rights, and because it is a pending complaint we are unable to provide any additional information."
