Colorado High School Yearbook Staff Members Quit After Advisor Orders Gay Couple Removed

Members of a Colorado Springs high school's yearbook staff are staging a protest after claiming an advisor asked them to remove a photo of a lesbian couple.

As the Associated Press is reporting, Palmer High School students Rudolpho Tribulio and Anna Carmicheal say their yearbook adviser told them that a photo of a lesbian couple holding hands could not be included on a page they were creating about relationships. "She told me in these exact words -- you either cut the gay couple or I cut the page," Tribulio tells KRDO.com.

Still, an school official dismissed the claim. "When the photos came back from that page, there was too much PDA and that is against Palmer policy," said District 11 Public Information Officer Devra Ashby. "Regardless of any sort of situation inside the photograph. If theres too much PDA, it's against policy. It's going to get cut."

After the relationship page was axed, editors opted for a so-called "diversity" page, but the advisor added an additional restriction. "No names, only the labels. So for a picture of a muslim, she wanted to label them as a muslim," said former Palmer High School yearbook editor Anna Carmichael.
