A 67-year-old California man not only survived a 200-foot plunge off a cliff, he kept himself alive days after the car accident by eating leaves and drinking water from a nearby creek.
David LaVau was found by his children five or six days after the accident, the Associated Press reports. Lavau reportedly made a camp, where he stayed until his rescue on Thursday.
His children said they got worried after not hearing from their father for several days. They took matters into their own hands and searched for LaVau themselves, looking down every hill on a nearby stretch of road until they found him, the report states.
"I just ran up to the top... and I looked down and I saw my dad's car, and of course my heart dropped," Sean LaVau, LaVau's son, told KTLA.
"...The next thing we heard Dad saying `help, help,' and there he was," daughter Lisa Lavau told CBS Los Angeles.
They were able to narrow down their search area after obtaining surveillance video from a supermarket their father visited, CBS Los Angeles reports.
LaVau was traveling on Friday when he swerved and slammed on his brakes to avoid bright lights coming in the opposite direction, CBS Los Angeles reports. The sudden stop sent the car "plummet[ing] down an embankment.
LaVau suffered multiple broken bones and a dislocated shoulder and is scheduled for surgery, according to the Associated Press. He is reportedly in good spirits.
Another car was found nearby, but the driver was not alive, the Associated Press reports. It's uncertain whether the vehicle was from a separate incident.
