David Spade wants Reese Witherspoon to know: If you have to ask someone "Do you know my name?" it probably means they don't.
Early Friday morning, Witherspoon and her husband, Jim Toth, were pulled over in Atlanta, Ga., for a suspected DUI after a cop noticed Toth drifting into the oncoming lane of traffic.
As Toth -- whose BAC level registered at .139 -- was being arrested, the actress exited the vehicle and confronted the officer. Witherspoon asked the cop, "Do you know my name?" according to a police report obtained by Variety. The officer said he did not, to which the actress replied, "You’re about to find out who I am ... You are going to be on national news."
TMZ caught up with Spade in Hollywood on Monday night and asked Spade his thoughts on Witherspoon's response.
"I think the general rule is: When you say 'Do you know who I am?' the answer is most likely 'no,'" he said. "If you have to explain to someone you're famous, then you're technically not that famous."
The "Grown Ups 2" actor went on to explain that, for example, when he can't get into a club he just says "great, thanks" instead of getting into an argument. "I don't try to explain to them I'm a big deal because clearly I'm not a big enough of a deal. Know what I mean? Makes sense."
Spade isn't the only one to diss the 37-year-old following the embarrassing incident. Jimmy Kimmel took aim at Witherspoon during his Monday night show, Us Weekly notes.
"Does that ever work?" asked Kimmel. "'Do you know who I am?' is second only to 'Do you know who my father is?' It's a bad question because the answer is either 'no' -- which is embarrassing -- or 'yes, and you're going to jail.'"
Witherspoon released an apology late Sunday evening saying she is "deeply embarrassed" about the things she said. "The words I used that night definitely do not reflect who I am," she added.
