8th placed D.C. United hosted 4th place Philadelphia Union knowing that a win would give them a chance to catch up to the New England Revolution, sitting in that final playoff spot. While the Union were looking to win and move closer to cementing a top 4 finish. Neither were successful, but both came away with a point after a 2-2 tie.
Former United player Chris Pontius returned to RFK for the first time since he was traded in the off season.
United began brightly,
...with Taylor Kemp passing the ball into the unguarded far side of the net to take the lead
United then kept attempting to press their advantage and extend their lead...
with Patrick Nyarko sliding in to a through ball, that he was unable to connect with.
After that, the game went back and forth
Until finally, in the first minute of injury time, Tranquillo Barnetta poked the ball into the net to level the score.
The second half began with DC pushing forward...
...with one shot cleared off the line by a Union defender
Then in the 57th minute, Pontius scored against his former employers to take the lead: 2-1.
Both teams continued to pressure
In the 85th minute a non-penalty call that went against United
Caused Coach Ben Olsen to launch a tirade against the referee
Which led to him being ejected from the game
This seemed to invigorate the home team, who really started pouring everything forward
...resulting in a tying goal in the 4th minute of injury time from the head of Steve Birnbaum
