Sometimes the danger comes from within on "Deadliest Catch." Well, from a combination of turmoil within and turmoil in the seas. For Elliott, captaining the Saga, it was a fight with his girlfriend over the phone. The fight left him distracted, and this is not a position where one can afford distractions.
This distraction caused him to miss a giant 50-foot wave, and so he didn't warn his crew about it. With men on the deck, the wave slammed hard into the crew. Elliott was immediately concerned, as it looked like one of the deckhands may have gone over the side with a pot. It was said that if you're in a pot and it goes over, you're going to the bottom of the ocean with it. End of story.
Luckily, the deckhand managed to avoid that grisly fate, but it was still a dangerous mistake made by a distracted captain. It was a brutal storm -- even the episode was called "The Storm of the Season." One captain called it the hardest start to the season he'd seen in a decade.
Making matters worse on the Saga, Elliott's crew could tell he was distracted and in a foul mood. They even figured he'd fought with his girlfriend. They need to trust that he has razor-sharp focus in order for the season to be a success.
All the drama may be challenging for Elliott and his crew, but it's great for Discovery. The network is tops among men on Tuesday nights, thanks in large part to the power of "Deadliest Catch" 9 p.m. ET.
