Americans for Prosperity, the conservative advocacy group backed by the Koch brothers, released a pair of TV ads Thursday that seize on the flawed rollout of Obamacare to attack House Democrats.
The $600,000 ad buy targets Reps. Rick Nolan (Minn.) and Ann McLane Kuster (N.H.), two first-term Democrats who weren't even in Congress to vote on the Affordable Care Act in 2009 and 2010. Americans for Prosperity nonetheless ties the freshman lawmakers to the health care law, calling for its repeal.
The Minnesota ad spotlights President Barack Obama's pledge that "if you like your plan, you can keep it," which later turned out to be untrue and was deemed Politifact's "lie of the year." The New Hampshire spot offers a broader assessment, stating that Obamacare "just doesn't work."
Republicans plan to once again make the health care law a wedge issue as voters head to the polls in 2014. A CNN/ORC poll released Thursday found that voters would prefer a Republican congressional candidate over a Democratic one by 5 points. Other recent polls have shown Democrats slightly ahead or both parties tied, proving it's early yet to predict whether the initial failures of the Obamacare rollout will give the GOP an advantage next November.
