Less than a week following a DUI arrest in South Carolina, rapper-actor DMX filed for bankruptcy in a Manhattan court on Monday.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the 42-year-old rapper (born Earl Simmons) owes $1.24 million in child support and more than $21,000 on an auto lease.

The rapper’s representative, Domenick Nati, released a statement to the site addressing his financial woes;

DMX’s financial strains have been inhibiting his career for several years. Poor financial management by prior representation have caused him to be ineligible to retain a passport. The purpose of this bankruptcy filing is for reorganization so he can perform for his fans oversees [sic]. We are currently planning a tour in Europe and Africa for the fall of 2013.

In addition to Simmons’ recent legal troubles, the rapper was also arrested earlier this year in nearby South Carolina for suspicion of driving without a license. He was later released after paying a fine.
