Multiplatinum hip-hop artist and actor DMX has had a rocky relationship with his son, Xavier. In an effort to sort through their issues, Iyanla Vanzant sits both men down for what she hopes will be a heart-to-heart healing session -- but the discussion doesn't go as planned.
In this clip from the 90-minute season premiere of "Iyanla: Fix My Life," Xavier begins to tell his father how he feels about their past, but DMX's defensive response prompts Iyanla to step in. "You're not letting him finish," she says to DMX.
"Lady, please," DMX says, launching into a string of curse words. "Listen, this is my son right here. I'm talking to him!"
"Lower your voice," Iyanla tells DMX. "Pump your brakes. Pump your brakes, brother. This is the only thing I want to say: He's trying. He's not feeling heard by you, X. Let him finish a sentence."
Iyanla turns to Xavier and asks how he felt toward his father and how those feelings prevented the two from having a relationship. Xavier responds directly to DMX: "It felt like you were a liar and a hypocrite… Most of the time, [you were] very hostile and --"
"Towards you?" DMX interrupts.
"No no no, but just in the house," Xavier continues in the clip. "The way you would talk made me feel like beneath you. Even [if] what you were saying was good."
DMX demands that his son give him an example of this behavior, but Xavier says that occurred too long ago to recall specifics. Iyanla steps in and asks Xavier if he can give DMX an example from today instead. That's when DMX explodes.
"Lady, shut the f--- up!" he shouts. "...Stop running your mouth!"
DMX stands abruptly and tells Xavier, "We'll talk when she stops running her f---ing mouth." He walks out of the room.
