According to EW, Shearsmith will play actor Patrick Troughton in "An Adventure in Space and Time," which details the creation of "Doctor Who." Troughton took over the titular role in 1966 after William Hartnell (played in the TV movie by David Bradley), who was the first actor to portray the Doctor.

"I first asked Reece about 12 years ago when I started thinking about this project," the TV movie's screenwriter, Mark Gatiss, told Britain's Radio Times. "I just remember thinking, if anyone plays Patrick Troughton, it should be Reece. Like the second Doctor, he's small, saturnine and a comic genius."
