Armed Man Shot And Killed In Front Of Hawaii Middle School

Two shots were fired, but it's not yet clear if police or the suspect fired first.

A police chase on Tuesday turned deadly after a 31-year-old man was shot and killed outside of a middle school in Honolulu.

During a press conference at the scene of the incident, Honolulu Police Major Larry Lawson said family members of the man reported him missing and distraught around 12:30 p.m. that day, according to local news station KHON2.

Police then located the 31-year-old suspect, who appeared to have a gun in his possession, in the Ko Olina area of Oahu driving a black Mustang. Police officers chased the suspect more than 20 miles, during which time "there was some sort of menacing type action with the firearm on the street that officers could see," according to Lawson.

The suspect finally stopped on a street fronting Dole Middle School in Honolulu, according to local news station Hawaii News Now.

The suspect reportedly turned the gun on himself and fired, but one officer also fired a shot at the suspect when he saw the man reach for the gun. HPD has not yet confirmed who fired first or which shot caused the fatality.

Lawson told local news station KITV4 that "a gunshot was heard followed by another gunshot and the victim was then removed and transported to Queen's [Medical Center] where he later died."

Police on the scene, however, told Hawaii News Now that the officer opened fire after the gunman turned his firearm on himself.

The middle school was forced into lockdown around 2:40 p.m. after school officials heard a gunshot in the area, according to KHON2. Nearby parents who were waiting to pick up their children from school joined the students and teachers on campus for the lockdown.

The deceased man, who has not been identified by the Honolulu Police Department, allegedly sent his ex-girlfriend text messages earlier in the day that said he intended to kill himself, along with photos of a shotgun, KHON2 reported.

A neighbor of the suspect told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that the 31-year-old lived across the street from the middle school where the shooting occurred.
