Domino's -- the fast-food-ish mainstay that serves up American-style pizzas topped with things like Philly cheese steak, ranch dressing, and buffalo chicken -- just opened its first store in Italy, pizza's mother country. If I could insert a wide-eyed surprise-face emoji here, I would.
How will Italians react to Domino's very particular iteration of fast food that Americans have grown to know and love and identify as pizza over the past half century? It remains to be seen. But, according to the company's announcement, Dominos' Pizza Italia will be offering a slightly different menu -- one that might play better to local sensibilities and tastes.
"Domino's is a global brand, with American roots, and we're proud to be able to introduce it to the Italian people -- with a twist," said franchise head Alessandro Lazzaroni. "We will be using a recipe created by us, using locally sourced wheat. Everything else is purely Italian. We are purchasing all of our products from Italian producers. We've created our own recipe, starting for the original pizza recipe, with Italian products, like 100 percent tomato sauce and mozzarella, and products like Prosciutto di Parma, Gorgonzola, Grana Padano, and Mozzarella di bufala Campana."
According to national surveys, Italians eat pizza on average seven times each month -- with margherita pizza coming in on top as the country's overwhelming favorite. To that end, Domino's Milan will offer margherita pizzas -- along with Napoli-style pizzas and Sicilian style, as well.
Even more exciting? Domino's will be bringing its online ordering system to Milan. Customers in the city will be able to have a hot takeout pizza delivered right to their door with just a few clicks of the mouse -- not a dinnertime formula that's very popular at the moment in Italy.
What do you think about the export of American fast food pizza to Italy? Personally, I love trying out local versions of American fast food when I'm traveling abroad -- do you?
