Downtown Chicago Construction: Wacker Drive, Lake Street Traffic Jams Expected Friday

Commuters to downtown Chicago should prepare to get creative Friday morning, as a major intersection will be packed with more than 100 concrete-mixing trucks working on a major construction project.

The intersection of Wacker Drive and Randolph Street is the first of seven to be rebuilt as part of the Wacker Drive reconstruction project, a massive undertaking to resurface the major downtown artery. City officials are instructing drivers to avoid Wacker and Lake Street Friday, according to ABC.

The Chicago Sun-Times has more details on the construction, from the Chicago Department of Transportation. About 125 mixing trucks will dump a 13-inch-thick layer of concrete on the intersection, amounting to nearly 1,100 cubic yards of concrete.

Trucks will start their work at around 8 a.m., and the procession of mixers will continue for around eight hours -- running through the beginnings of the Friday afternoon rush hour.

Apparently, the work was set to take place on Thursday, but late Wednesday it was postponed for a day, the Chicago Tribune reports.
