There are plenty of perks when it comes to living in D.C. One of those is the number of farmers markets in the area, and one that definitely deserves a visit for those who haven't seen it yet is the Dupont Circle FRESHFARM Market.

Even though I'm fond of the Dupont area, I had somehow managed to miss this market up until last week. I was perusing Twitter when I saw that FRESHFARM Markets had retweeted a message from Baklava Couture saying that they would be at the Dupont market on Sunday. Being quite the fan of baklava, I couldn't get over that A) there was a business whose main product was baklava and B) I could find them at a farmers market. I knew I had to pay them a visit.

When I got to the market the next day, I was in for a pleasant surprise. What a variety of vendors! There was buffalo meat from Cibola Farms and soaps from Harmony Creek Farm as well as plenty of free samples, including chocolate pudding from Keswick Creamery and fruits and vegetables from Toigo Orchards. I actually owe my new fondness for cherries to Toigo Orchards. For years I've claimed to dislike cherries, never quite remembering when or why I decided I didn't like them. But after seeing a sample plate of delicious-looking sweet cherries from the vendor, I decided to try one and now I'm hooked!

Since the market isn't incredibly large, it was pretty easy for me to find Baklava Couture. I purchased a piece of cinn-cocoa walnut as well as a piece of pistachio baklava, and I definitely wasn't disappointed. I always appreciate a piece of good baklava, but it was even better to try some that was a bit more creative than I had had in the past. I don't know about you, but I've never had something like cinn-cocoa walnut baklava before!

With both my hunger and intrigue satisfied, I slowly began to exit the market. I listened to the live music and learned from the market's social media board that the "Tweet of the week" wins money to spend at the market. Maybe I'll win (fingers crossed!) but even if I don't, I'll be back. I love how there are so many different types of products for sale and how the market isn't so large you feel like you're lost or can't move but at the same time, it's not so small that it seems like if you blink, you'll miss most of it.

The market is currently open on Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a list of vendors participating each week can be found here. I hope you decide to take a look at it if you haven't been there already. It's always a good feeling knowing that you can find great products in addition to supporting local farmers and producers!
