The American rock band whose Paris concert was stormed during the Nov. 13 terror attacks described the devastating scene in their first interview since that night.
The Eagles Of Death Metal lead singer Jesse Hughes and bandmate Joshua Homme sat down with Vice co-founder Shane Smith to talk about what happened when terrorists associated with the self-professed Islamic State opened fire in Paris' Bataclan concert hall, killing 89 people.
In a preview of the interview released Saturday, a tearful Hughes explained how several people hid in the band's dressing room trying to escape the attack.
"The killers were able to get in and killed every one of them except a kid who hid under my leather jacket," Hughes said.
Several people close to the band were killed that night, including Nick Alexander, who was selling merchandise, and their record label colleagues Thomas Ayad, Marie Mosser and Manu Perez.
The band has released few statements since the attack. It canceled its remaining tour dates and Homme's charity, The Sweet Stuff Foundation, began raising money for the families of the victims.
"People were playing dead, they were so scared," Hughes said of the incident. He also noted the bittersweet reason there were so many casualties at the show.
"So many people wouldn't leave their friends," Hughes said. "So many people put themselves in front of people."
