Ed Schultz went after Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck for their comments about the Japanese earthquake and nuclear crisis on his Wednesday show.
Limbaugh and Beck both stirred controversy for things they said on their respective radio shows. Beck said on Monday that the quake could be a message from God, telling the world to change course. Limbaugh caused outrage by mocking the Japanese refugees and finding irony in the fact that an earthquake struck an environmentally conscious country.
Schultz focused on Beck, saying that he was running an "ignorance marathon." He also played a clip of Beck saying that the nuclear threat from the crisis at the Fukushima plant was being overblown, and that the worst nuclear disaster in history--the Chernobyl meltdown--had only caused 56 deaths.
Schultz acknowledged that this was indeed one published estimate of the number of deaths caused by the Chernobyl disaster. But he also showed other studies that put the estimate much, much higher, including one that guessed that as many as 500,000 people were killed by the fallout from Chernobyl.
"Beck should stick to making insensitive comments with his buddy Rush," Schultz said. "At least those remarks don't involve things like facts or history that prove he's a liar."
