Effort To Block Long-Term US-Iraq Security Agreements Gains Steam

Momentum is building for a push to block President Bush from signing a long-term security agreement with the Iraqi government. It got a boost today from the New York Times editorial board, which argued that "Mr. Bush must not be allowed to tie the hands of his successor and ensure the country's continued involvement in an open-ended war."

Now two House Foreign Affairs Committee subcommittees have scheduled a joint hearing for next week to address the subject: "The Proposed U.S. Security Commitment to Iraq: What Will Be In It and Should It Be a Treaty?"

The issue was injected into the presidential campaign Tuesday evening when Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) asked Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) during a debate if he would co-sponsor legislation preventing Bush from signing such an agreement.
