Elijah Dukes Pot Arrest: Former Nationals, Rays Player Reportedly Tried To Eat Pot During Traffic Stop

Ex-MLB Player Reportedly Tried To Eat Marijuana To Avoid Arrest

Former Major League Baseball player Elijah Dukes was arrested on Thursday morning, reports the Tampa Bay Times. Per the report, Dukes was pulled over in his orange 2011 Chevy Camaro after committing a traffic violation in Tampa, Fla. and found to be in possession of marijuana.

According to Tampa Bay Online, the police report claims that Dukes had flakes of marijuana on his shirt and was attempting to eat a bag of pot when police approached his car. Police on the scene also observed a blunt tucked behind Dukes' ear.

After removing the evidence from his mouth, police took the 27-year-old, who last appeared in the majors with the Washington Nationals in 2009, into custody and booked him at Hillsborough County Jail.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that Dukes is facing "charges tampering with physical evidence, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving with a cancelled, suspended or revoked license."

His bail was set at $4,750.

Once considered among the most gifted prospects in baseball, Dukes flamed out after just three combined seasons between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Nationals. After leaving baseball, Dukes began a rap career under the name "Fly Eli." In February 2011, Dukes informed the Tampa Tribune that he smoked pot before home games during his time with the Nats and claimed that teammates transported illegal drugs on team flights.
