Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer (D), who resigned from office due to a sex scandal, came down hard on former Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) on Monday for his inappropriate online conversations with women.
During an appearance on MSNBC's "Hardball" on Monday, host Chris Matthews asked Spitzer, "If a public official used their office equipment to engage in the kind of pastime that Anthony Wiener's been involved in in the last couple years, would you fire them?"
"I think the answer is yes," replied Spitzer, who is running for New York City comptroller. Weiner is running for New York City mayor.
"We have had a number of instances over the years where...municipal employees [and] state employees used computers and the like for improper purposes," added Spitzer. "There is an appropriate sanction for that, [and] there should be."
Weiner resigned in 2011 after sending explicit photographs of his anatomy to women through Twitter and Facebook.
Spitzer, however, had his own trouble while serving as New York state governor. In 2008, he resigned after revelations of his involvement with prostitutes.
Spitzer also said that he would not be voting for Weiner.
“You're not going to vote for Anthony Weiner, can you just say that now?" asked Matthews. "You don't think he should be mayor of New York."
"Fair point, that is correct,” Spitzer replied.
A Quinnipiac University poll released Monday revealed that Weiner dropped to fourth place in the New York City mayoral run, following revelations that he had been sending inappropriate pictures and online messages to an Indiana woman, among others, within the past year.
