Blur frontman Damon Albarn is not only confirming the end of the British rock group, but he's also saying that it's "unlikely" that there will be any new material from his animated side project, Gorillaz, which recently released its seemingly last single "DoYaThing."
In an interview with The Guardian, Albarn mentioned his Gorillaz collaborator, artist Jamie Hewlett, and said: "We were at cross purposes somewhat on that last record, which is a shame. So until a time comes when that knot has been untied..."
During the band's 2010 world tour, the two had a falling out when Hewlett thought that his visuals were no longer as central to their performance. "It was one of those things," Albarn said. "The music and the videos weren't working as well together, but I felt we'd made a really good record, and I was into it. So we went and played it."
After forming their collaboration in 1997, to date, Gorillaz have released four albums and brought Albarn success in the American mainstream market. Their last album, Plastic Beach debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 112,000 copies.
In the same interview, Albarn said that Blur's Hyde Park gig this summer might be the band's final show. The frontman admitted that the band could disband after the concert on August 12, which marks the end of the 2012 London Olympics.
Blur will also release a new single entitled Under the Westway around the same time as the Hyde Park, but Albarn has quashed speculation an album of fresh material will follow, because he wants to leave on a high note.
When asked if Blur would play live again after Hyde Park, Albarn responded by saying "no, not really".
