Eric Simmons Subdued By Police Robot After 7-Hour Standoff In Minnesota

There's no escaping the mechanical arm of the law. A police robot took down an armed man who holed himself up in his home for seven hours.

Eric Simmons, 29, was arrested Sunday with the aid of a robotic cop after a domestic disturbance call to his house in Minneapolis turned to a standoff with a SWAT team, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.

A woman who had fled Simmons' house flagged down a patrol car to report that Simmons was inside, possibly armed and arguing with another man. She told officers that there was also another woman and a child in the home. The three escaped as Simmons allegedly hunkered down inside, police said.

Seven hours and a few failed negotiations later, a SWAT team sent a robot to breach the home and subdue Simmons with a chemical irritant, the Star Tribune reports.

Simmons was transported to a nearby hospital for a routine exam before he was taken to jail. He was slapped with several charges including false imprisonment and reckless discharge of a firearm. Police didn't say whether they found a gun on him when he was arrested.
