The U.N. Committee Against Torture is expected to hear testimony from the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) on reparative (or "ex-gay") therapy. Officials from NCLR are said to be lobbying the U.N. in an effort to urge every state to "adopt legislation or regulations" that would ban attempts "to change a minor's sexual orientation or gender identity."
Dave Rubin of The Rubin Report discussed that news in a segment featuring "The Real L Word" star Whitney Mixter and atheist YouTube personality Jaclyn Glenn.
"This is, essentially, the equivalent of taking an African-American kid, putting them in a camp, and telling them they need to become white by the time they leave," Mixter said of reparative therapy practices. "It can't be done, and so therefore it is torture."
Glenn agreed, noting, "This is child abuse. [Parents] should not have the ability to do that to their children, so obviously the problem lies with the government not having stricter regulations on this. I can't believe they're still allowing it."
She then added: "There's just not the separation of church and state that there needs to be."
California and New Jersey have passed laws banning reparative therapy for minors, while New York, Massachusetts and Illinois are among the states reportedly considering legislation on the matter.
